Sonia Balderas Bio
My name is Sonia Balderas, and I am the Family Services Director at Hidalgo County Head Start Program. I reside in Edinburg with my husband, Angel and my two children, Jose Angel and Nereyda. In my spare time, I enjoy traveling, spending time with family and volunteering in the community. Shortly after graduating from La Joya High School, I joined AmeriCorps-Communities in Schools. My time with AmeriCorps provided me with invaluable experience working directly with communities in need; with a focus on helping middle school aged students overcome obstacles and succeed in school and beyond. I received an associate of applied science degree in health and human services from South Texas College and a bachelor’s degree in social work from the University of Texas Pan-American. My career journey of 20 years with Head Startbegan as a community volunteer, followed by various positions at both campus and administrative levels.
Working for the Head Start program further solidified my commitment to social work. I understand the struggles many in my community face and put my focus and passion on serving those in need. As the Family Services Director, I oversee the operation and management of the Family Services Department which includes Eligibility, Recruitment, Selection, Enrollment, and Attendance (ERSEA) along with Parent, Family, and Community Engagement (PFCE). Being part of Head Start at different capacities has allowed me to have a broad understanding of how various aspects of the program contribute to the well-being of children and families. I love being part of a team that helps families thrive and ensure children have the best possible start in life.
